Come On Baby Light My Fire

Once upon a time, my Auntie Yvonne was married to my Uncle Benny.  Aunt Yvonne is an artist and back in the 1960's she used to hire nude models to come sit for her.  One afternoon, Uncle Benny came home from work, strolled into the living room to find my aunt sketching away with a female nude posed in a nearby chair.  He nonchalantly assumed a comfortable position leaning against the kitchen stove.

As my aunt is busily working on the portrait, she smelled something funny.  She glanced toward Uncle Benny and saw his shirt was on fire.  Uncle Benny was totally unaware of what was happening as his attention was directed elsewhere.  Aunt Yvonne got up very carefully so as not to alarm my uncle and walked over to the kitchen sink about to grab a bowl of some kind to fill with water and douse the fire.

About this time Uncle Benny felt the flames licking up his back and ripped off his shirt, buttons flying in every direction!

Or,

Once upon a time, my Aunt Yvonne was married to my Uncle Benny.  Aunt Yvonne is an artist and did do nude drawings but this has nothing to do with my uncle's shirt catching on fire.  Uncle Benny came home from work one day, strolled into the kitchen to find Aunt Yvonne ironing his shirts.  He assumed a comfortable position leaning against the oven and proceeded to watch her and talk about his day.  They recently had a baby, my cousin, Jimmy.  Baby Jimmy is very hungry.  Heating on the stove top in a pan of water is a baby bottle for Jimmy.

Directly in front of Uncle Benny, approximately 4 feet away, is a window.  He glanced out this window and lo and behold he could see his reflection.  Oh my, his shirt was on fire!  The flames were licking up his back side and by this time he can feel it burning his skin.

He hastily ripped off his shirt and buttons flew in every direction.

Which story do you believe is true?  My father told me the first one but my aunt confirmed that this is not the case and it happened exactly like the second story.

Me thinks my Uncle Benny must have elaborated and told my father the more interesting and exciting story of the nude woman.  ha ha

My dad still insists that Aunt Yvonne told him the first story and that she wanted to first check the life insurance policy because she was thinking of letting him burn.  Burn Baby, Burn.  ha ha

Bread and Wine

I just finished this painting for Pane e Vino, in Suisun City.  We made some swinging double doors for their restaurant and this painting is going on one of the doors.  Pane e Vino: Bread and Wine.

My First Real Welding Job

Michael is building a table for us to weld on and this morning I welded the seam connections on the frame.  When we first learned to weld that day at the welding shop, I couldn't see what I was doing very well and my welding wasn't that great.  Today I tried wearing reading glasses and now I can see what I'm doing and my welds are nice and smooth and even.  So much better!  I was welding blind that first day I learned.  What a difference some simple reading glasses make.
Hot sparks flying!
I'm breaking the wire tip off.
Mike wanted to try.

Welding 101

Michael and I learned to weld today.  One of Mike's long time customers owns a welding shop in Benicia and he told Mike about a year ago that he had a like new welder to give us and if we wanted to come down and learn how to do it, he'd have some of the guys teach us.  We just never had the time to do it until today.

The owner, Mike, is such a wonderful and nice man.  He gave us everything we need to get started:  the welder, several pairs of heavy duty gloves, the face mask to protect your eyes with a dial on the side to make it darker or lighter to see while welding, they gave us a shirt and all the little special hammers and tools needed.  How sweet!!  Now we need to go scrounge up some metal things to weld and make our new creations.

This is not a small welding shop, it's a large and impressive industrial operation they have going on.  Take a look at the huge equipment and machines and parts.  The steel they work with is very, very thick and heavy with some of the sheets being up to 6 inches thick.

They make parts for many companies, some of which are the refineries.  You know the tall stacks that come out of the refinery?  They make those.  Inside the tall tubes that stick out of the refineries are intricate parts, layers of trays, etc., so that when the oil or whatever goes through, it's all separated and refined.

Metal bits and pieces.

They made this huge cylinder thing.  It opens and is hollow and is meant to have men go inside to do what, I do not know.

They made these.
Humongous ceiling cranes move heavy equipment and parts.

Large, heavy, flat sheets of metal.

We were invited to Phil's party this weekend.  He and his son, Chad, have so many sculptures and I got sooooo many pictures.  Here's some photos I took.

At the beauty parlor.
This is gigantic.  Did Chad do this one??
Amazingly large sculptures lining the driveway.

Looking back towards the property.

Donated metal pile.
Each year, Phil Glashoff, and his son, Chad, have a couple of invitation only parties.  Bring a piece of scrap metal with you to donate.  As you can see, there are a wide variety of sculptures, something for everyone.  You can read about Phil HERE.  You can read about Chad HERE.  Father and son, two very dynamic, yet laid back, personalities.
